When Will the Villains Stop Speaking Arabic ?

October 12th, 2007
Books, Future, Games, Movies, Political

Earlier today, my brother handed me a book he just finished reading and recommended it as “similar to Clancy”. It was the New York Times Bestseller Spy by Ted Bell. So I did what I normally do when someone hands me a fiction novel. I turned it over to read the blurb on the back:
Counter-terrorist operative Alexander Hawke must save the United States from a devastating terrorist operation…The men in the jungle are highly trained Hezbollah warriors who are planning an unspeakably violent jihad against America.

Just what we need, more kill-the-Arabs type fiction, but wait a minute, it didn’t say highly-trained Arabs, it said Hezbollah. Indeed, I have no love for Hezbollah or any other military organization or Army, but I think most none-Arabs won’t know the difference, or care.

Flashback 1992; my cousins from Germany come visit us. They speak Arabic, but were raised as Germans. As usual, the adults sit and discuss “important” things, and my cousins join me to play. I say to them ‘Come on, let’s go kill some Germans !‘.

I was referring to Wolf3d which was a very popular video game at the time. You play an American soldier emprisoned in the dungeon of a German castle during WW2. As you enter a room within the dungeon, a guard would show up behind you ‘Halt ! Gestapo !‘. When you shoot the guard, he would blurt out ‘Mein Leiben‘ (my life), blood will trickle down his shirt, and you can then loot the corpse !

My cousins weren’t amused, they explained: ‘These are not Germans, they’re Nazis, we hate those guys’. Of course to an ignorant kid like me, what difference did it make what you called them, they speak German. Why should I care? In the 30s and 40s, the villians of American fiction were the Nazis and they spoke German. Once the cold war started. the new “villainese” became Russian, and communism was the greatest threat to “world peace”. Now the enemy speaks Arabic, and the lurking danger is from Islam.

One game I tried a couple of years ago went to great length to make the “killing experience” realistic. As you stroll along in the virtual city, playing the American soldier who would save humanity; the stores have authentic signs. The graffiti is hand-written Arabic. The coffee shop is playing something like Abd-Il Halim, and Um Kulothoom. You can hear the Azan from the mosque (although 50 times a day instead of 5).

As you are attacked by the fictional terrorists, they shout ‘Allahu Akbar’. When you sneak behind them, you will hear guys with names like “Akh-med” and “Habeeb” having conversations in English with a fake “Ali-Baba” accent. Sometimes they will come from a none-distinct fictional country in the middle-east; not to avoid offending anyone, but to save time doing additional research. Hollywood didn’t fare much better with dozens of movies of this type.

When will it end ? Sometime in the not too distant future, we will run out of oil. There will be nothing and no one worth protecting, so the foreign armies will withdraw. Civil wars will erupt, the remaining fortunes from the old oil wealth will be squandered on arms, and we will become the new Africa begging for handouts. What language will the “villains” speak then ? I’m guessing Chinese.

So, Come on, who wants to go kill some Aye-rabs ?

Can you identify the terrorist attacking the British red-coat in #1 (Hint: 1775) ? The T's
1- American revolutionary “Terorist” attacks Foreign British troops on US soil more than 200 years ago. Is this how countries are forged ? Couldn’t they have had “democracy” forced on them like the beautiful one we currently have in Iraq ?

2- Nazi trooper. The nazis invaded many countries and killed millions, yet when the British did the same, it wasn’t considered evil, it was called colonialism, and after all they were bringing civilisation to the heretics. Fortunately they’ve lost their power and since the US saved their hides in WW2, they only act as yes-men to US foreign policy.

it’s goin’ to be “Korean” , the next language i mean !
so i guess as arab we should unite to let mama america focus on korea instead if middle east ! ..
ok lets get real for a seconed now , media plays the most important part in this , as they show arab as walking beared killers , holding guns beside qura’an , burning flags & shouting ‘Dead to america’! ..
me as an arab , and a muslim , it scares me to see this on tv ! so how about those who knows NOTHING about arab and islam but they’re a total stupid thired-world people ! .. we cant blame them !
and it’s not the west media only , the middle-eastren one too ..
the arab countries who allows any new-opened channel to show whatever pops in their owners mind ! like lets say iraqi channel “Alzawra’” this channel actually shows terrorist killing soldiers in iraq ! .. i know im AGAINST the american setelment in iraq , but im also against these stupid acts ! ..
and lets not talk about “Fat7 & 7mas” who’re killing theirselves over “2l korsy” ..
if you’re seeing brothers are killing themselves cuz one of them is 7amas & the other one is fat7 , wouldn’t that make you wonder that they would kill you too !
i dont think i can blame such writers to write such books , as long as this “”"” is goin’ on outside , and media is showing it .. we cant blame them !
finally .. happy 3eed ><”

Aaah yes, but how does that explain years - no - decades of British villains in American movies? I guess our accent is just inherently villainous ;-)

There’s always been this trend in Hollywood films to have foreign villains because in America, most foreigners are seen as these backwards thinking uncivilized people. American’s live in a bubble, and movies that have stereotypical villains only reinforce that bubble.

Alia, the point is all Arabs have been judged and found guilty based on their race due to the actions of a very small minority. Worst yet the actions the US has taken to “supposedly” combat terrorism have actually increased it.

Qwaider, I played some of these games, but I felt guilty about it.

Chikapappi, the only way we will all get along, and there will be peace on earth is when we are all dead.

Tala, the problem is blind patriotism and indifference. Some Americans support their country and troops regardless whether they’re right or wrong, the rest don’t know the difference or don’t care as long as it doesn’t affect them

Lalylatoot, :)
Its funny you should say that, recently an English nanny was being tried for murder in the US and I think the lawyer argued that she couldn’t get a fair trial because of the way Americans reacted to a British accent.

Dana, unfortunately the “bubble people” are the most powerful nation on earth. So we need to get in that bubble and tell our own side of the story.

i think you are exaggerating, but yes the first few stereotypes you stated hold true about how muslims and arabs are portrayed as terrorists bla bla bla, but the kind of long term prediction sounds too, shall we say, don’t know, absurd? “so the foreign armies will withdraw.”, it’s as though these armies are protecting you,
“Alia, the point is all Arabs have been judged and found guilty based on their race due to the actions of a very small minority”, not that only, they are backward too, they are portrayed as stupid lazy people too. truth is i am not sure what to say about the topic anymore cause it’s too stereotypical.

Bot, its a guess not a prediction, and its not a random guess. Oil will run out. There have been books written about it. Its a matter of when, not if. A war was enough to disturb the economy of the whole region becuase the price went up, what happens when it runs out all together ? You do the math.

The topic should be stereotypical and loaded with sarcasm, I’m complaining about stereotyping in US media. Yes I am exagerating a bit. I wonder what a russian would have to say about this post :)

Thank you sir for your input.

Well, you just got it right ..

I once heard it from a friend .. They can’t live without an enemy and as you just explained it .. games give a very good impression of that .. it’s time for Arabs to play as the enemy ..

Ahmed, well put.

US Military and security institutions need an enemy to survive. The scarier they convince the public the enemy is, the less willing they would be to question giving these institutions more power and funds. This illusion is only needed to start a war, once started, they can create an unlimited supply of real enemies to further justify their existence.

Man, you hit a cord here with this post. Good job.

Things go basically like your childhood years - what is the difference between a German speaking person and a Nazi? Heck, even at this age, we often call our stiff German friends and bosses “Nazis”. The world loves to feed on stereotypes and there is absolutely nothing you can do to change it.

Many people are ignorant, arrogant and gullible. Governments try their best to “protect” its people from the outside world and foreign information. For the average American, Arabs = Muslims = terrorists. There are no Christian Arabs. There are no peaceful Muslims. Everyone in the Middle East is an Arab speaking Muslim who will grow up to blow something up. Just like Koreans and the Chinese and Imperial Japan.

True, I remember writing a letter to a newspaper editor saying something like (not every Arab is a muslim, and not every muslim is a terrorist), and it actually got published. This was after the OKC bombing where they immediately arrested the nearest Arab guy who had nothing to do with the whole affair, and almost all the media “theorised” a muslim Arab gorup is responsible until Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were arrested.

Yup, thing is Hani is that if you pay attention to the Western media outlets, they always say “a group of Muslim terrorists” instead of “a group of terrorists”. Does terrorism know a religion? Of course not - it is outside the scope of religion, regardless of how bloody of a history the religion has.

When there is a terrorist strike somewhere when Muslims are not involved, they simply say terrorist attack. Why not say Christian terrorists, Buddhist terrorists (that would be novel), or Mesozoic Pre-Atlantic terrorists? Nope, they can’t, because it is their job to brainwash people (isn’t this what media is about anyway) and divert them from other problems.

So it is either Muslim terrorists or no terrorist.

On a side note, when I was in NY I took a look at their social studies book. They actually have a chapter on Islam (which I am definite now has been modified to suit current needs), but even back then (1997) the chapter had many errors and misconceptions, most notably that Muslims are called Muhammadans, among other odd things.

Yeah, I always felt a bit weird playing Soldier of Fortune and blowing away my fellow Arabs :) At least they had real Arabic in it, so none of that AKHmed crap.

Well, the funny thing is Hezbollah setup their own game where the heroes kill Israelis.

I find most of these games too difficult, so I turn on the cheats, and then they get too boring.

I used to play multiplayer shooting games, that was more entertaining, but in Amman internet connecitons are bandwidth capped, so it’s not an option.
