3-day Weekend

September 21st, 2007
Economy

I was going to the safeway (Dwar Il-Madeeneh) on my way back from work yesterday, and I noticed some graffiti on the pedestrian bridge. It was asking workers to “Not settle for 1 day off a week, and demand their right to a 2-day weekend from their employer”. My first impression was that it must have been written by a communist.

Then I got to thinking, my sister has to work 6 days a week. I feel bad when I see her going to work on Saturdays while I’m relaxing. After all why do we work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day (6 on Ramadan), if not to get those wonderful 2 days to rest up so that we can do it all over again next week!

Recently I started an alternating day/night shift rotation at work. The problem was that the day shift is from Sunday-Thursday, but the night shift is from Monday to Friday. The trick was fixing the weekends so that we can switch shifts and still maintain those working days. My boss was very understanding and decided to give us a 3 day weekend on switching to night-shift in return for taking a one day weekend the next week.

Wait til the communists hear about this !

Hani, it is right that you take 3 days weekend these days but do not ever forget those nights when we spent 12 hours doing promotions and upgrades for our customers, it is right that you take 3 days weekend but do not ever forget when we spent all the night waiting for customer’s TS to come an zip a .war file.

Have a nice day and enjoy your fancy days week-end.

Wasim, as long as those incidents are exceptions to the rule, I am happy, and I’ll consider myself blessed to have a decent job.
